Saving Lives Down The Track
What a great job. How often do you get to direct actors, heavy machinery AND a full length passenger train?
ONTRACK required a video production company to produce an arresting, memorable, high-impact video support for Auckland's DART rail upgrade project H&S induction programme for all contractors and employees. It's a requirment of the Health and Safety in Employment and Railway Act that ONTRACK provide employees and contractors with information on identified railway hazards that they may be exposed to while at work on DART projects, and most importantly, that this information "must be in such a form and manner that the employee is reasonably likely to understand it" (HSE Act 1992, Sec 12)
The main audience for this video is all future contract and employee inductees. It'll primarily be viewed in controlled induction-specific sessions under the guidance of an inductor. Most messages are best delivered in short, easily digested sections. Spreading delivery of the video portions of the induction message throughout the session rather than in one hit, aids memory retention, allows for more dynamic light and shade in the presentation, is less onerous on the inductor, and gives greater control of the consistency of message delivery.
Although we've had award-winning success using humour in training and safety messages it wasn't really appropriate in this case. So our suggested approach was a combination of: a short, dramatic, attention-getting opening video, simulated onsite induction tour on an actual work site, dramatic recreations H&S incidents on the 4 different Worksite types, and interviews with contractors and locomotive enginers affected by or involved in actual incidents- both near-misses and fatalities.
On the track for ONTRACKBy engaging Screentime to produce this important, and potentially life-saving message, ONTRACK were able to guarantee:
- optimal message cut-through from a combination of dramatic and narative approachs.
- stronger recall through the unscripted emotive messages and re-enactments
- a more visually stimulating induction session
- greater consistency in delivery of ONTRACK’s Health & Safety message at every induction session- from first impression to final thought.
