There's nothing quite like a day by the water- even if you're working. So we were delighted when MAF Biosecurity New Zealand chose us to spend a day and a half shooting their new "Clean Boats, Living Seas" DVD in picturesque Picton recently.

MAF Biosecurity required an experienced video production company to produce a DVD which dynamically and engagingly presented the positive impact correct boat cleaning and painting can have on protecting New Zealand’s marine ecosystems.

The purpose of the video is to remind owners of moored boats of the importance of correct cleaning and antifoul their vessels- the harm marine pests can cause- and demonstrate the correct cleaning methods and is aimed primarily at boat owners but also boat clubs and marinas, to spread the message as wide as possible. After watching the video they want more owners of moored boats to clean and antifoul their vessels- and do it correctly in terms of biosecurity efficacy.

Our approach was to use presenter with a fishing and boating background teamed up with a senior MAF scientist to deliver the message by discussing the types of pests threatening our coastline and then demonstrating the best-practice for boat cleaning and antifouling at a busy boatyard.

By using a combination of friendly personalities, expert opinion and a light, engaging delivery to present this educational message meant that Screentime were able to provide a more powerful and memorable video than one with just a dry voice-over and demonstration images.

Beautiful Marlborough weather for the shoot meant we were able to complete the whole shoot in record time and still get great footage. And we even had time for lunch at a local vineyard on the way home.

Here's what Senior Communications Advisor Lesley Patston had to say about the experience from her side.
