Lights, Camera... Check, Clean, Dry.
MAF Biosecurity required an update to their Didymo prevention DVD, one which dynamically and engagingly presented the positive impact correct cleaning can have on protecting New Zealand’s freshwater ecosystems.
The video reminds freshwater users why checking, cleaning and drying water-related equipment and clothing is important, the harm freshwater pests can cause, and demonstrate the correct, simple cleaning methods.
The target audience for these videos is primarily boating, fishing, 4WD and tramping clubs, but also contractors working around waterways and any freshwater users, and after watching it MAF wanted more freshwater users to check, clean and dry their equipment.
MAF also had a set budget limit so taking that into account we suggested a similar approach to the one we successfully took with their “Clean Boats, Living Seas” marine pest DVD last year. Experienced boatie and radio personality Lance Dunne, accompanied by Didymo Programe Manager, John Sanson, deliver the relevant information in a friendly and down to earth manner.
As with the marine video, getting straight to the point with this message is crucial. Describing the negative impact that not cleaning gear between waterways can have on New Zealand’s freshwater ecosystems is a mandatory part of this message, so right up front is the time to hit the audience with it. By scripting this important video with some personality we were able to present this information in a fresh and visually stimulating way. And by planning meticulously, were were able to have enjoyable shoot in spite of typically fickle winter weather! Here's how MAF found the process.
