Marae DIY

Marae DIY is the brainchild of presenter Nevak Ilolahia: "One of the most special things you can ever be part of is to see communities come together to enhance the one place they care about most.” "I always get a warm feeling when I arrive at a marae. And then to see the results achieved in a couple of days’ hard work is truly amazing.”

Marae DIY, the programme which helps marae knock out their ten year plans in just four days, is generously supported by many companies who thru sponsorship and discounts for the marae, assist their renovations dreams come true. A big thank you to all those companies and people who contributed to this latest series.

Each marae makeover is a huge local initiative with businesses and sponsors combining their support to help the marae realise its renovation dreams. Mabel Wharekawa-Burt, Hangarau Marae: "Hei otinga, kei te mihi ki a koutou i mahi kaha ai ki te kawea i tenei kaupapa ki tona whakatutukitanga.”

This entertaining bilingual programme offers a lot more than similar DIY programmes to include a smattering of tribal history, a dash of Maori humour and even makeovers for the nannies! Each marae provides its own unique blend of tikanga (protocol) and tangata (people) to provide every show with a real sense of what the community is about and the people who keep it alive.

Numia Tomoana, Waipatu Marae: "We are enjoying our flash marae, thank you, and on Saturday we had our first tangi since the DIY. It was raining and we all stayed nice and dry under the new shelters. The DIY is having enormous valuable ripple effects – whakawhanaungatanga, activity, wairua boost – so many beautiful spin offs.”

Watch the team as they work hard to achieve massive marae makeovers in only 4 days, and get to know wonderful people and great stories. It's entertainment in the most heartwarming way.

In the sixth series of the top rating and award winning series Marae DIY (best reality format programme at the 2007 Qantas Media Awards and also a finalist in the 2007 TV Guide People’s Choice Awards and the Air New Zealand Screen Awards), the team travels from Pawarenga in the far north to Picton in the South Island as they makeover another 6 marae (and in total 43 marae around the country have now been Marae DIY’ed). The team create their magic (and mayhem) over 4 days as they answer the calls from marae around the country to lend a helping hand with their marae renovations.
